I always say when you want to get noticed wear something noticeable. Sounds easy and yet most people go weeks and months without someone ever acknowledging how they look.

Since I get stopped often and know firsthand the opportunities I’ve gained from having an impactful 1st impression, I started to wonder how many people take advantage of something so simple.

After research and thinking back over all the events I attend I determined that within everything I go to attendees fit into 1 of 3 categories: 90-5-5. So, what is the 90-5-5 Rule and what does it mean for you?

The 90-5-5 Rule simply states: At any event your image will be classified as:

The 90% of people that meet the status quo but don’t stand out. They look good enough but not enough to be considered head turning.

The 5% that show up completely under dressed. We’ve all seen them. The gentleman wearing khakis at the opera or the lady with a way too short skirt at a black-tie event. They stand out but for all the wrong reasons.

The last 5% is the category you want to fall in to. These are the people that stand out because they look amazing. They are dressed to impress. Everyone takes notice and their presence fills the room.

The reason why it’s so important to fall into this last group is that at a typical soiree you’ll only get to have ten meaningful conversations. Yet, if your image is spot on hundreds of people will take notice! Not only will they notice you, but you’ll leave a lasting impression thus setting the tone for future engagements.

Countless times I’ve been introduced to people who recognize me simply from what I wore at previous engagements. Now, before you suggest that some people are blessed with more presence than others remember; when you look good you feel good and that is what elevates your confidence and presence you give off!
